The Endless Mountains Heritage Region is teaming up with the DCNR for its second event in the Sullivan County Hikes & Bikes Series: The Ricketts Glen Challenge! Experience this spectacular state park like few have before!

To complete the challenge, hikers must take a photo with their camera or cell phone at various designated points throughout Ricketts Glen State Park! Participants have both Saturday and Sunday (July 24 and 25) to complete the challenge and also have the option of completing the challenge solo or by joining up with a guided group. The choice is up to you! Mileage will vary, depending on how you go about the challenge. The guided tour will be roughly 7.5-miles on Saturday and around 5-miles on Sunday. Participants will be provided route options/maps.

Those who wish to participate both Saturday and Sunday have the options of staying overnight in organized group camping areas #3 and #4 at Ricketts Glen or they can make arrangements to stay at the beautiful Eagles Mere Inn ( at a 20-percent discounted rate. Call Richard Lobach at (570) 525-3273 to make those arrangements. Space is limited, so don’t delay!
We will meet at the Ricketts Glen Visitors Center at 9:30 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Those staying overnight should park their vehicles at organized group tent areas #3 and #4 (Just south of Lake Jean along the Bear Walk Trail; 41.332859, -76.293312). Those not staying overnight can park at the Lake Rose Trailhead lot and walk to the camping area (Parking fills up quickly, so come early). On Saturday morning, hikers will be provided their EMHR Ricketts Glen Challenge cards, which they will use to tally all of the sites they make it to throughout the weekend. A photograph with the challenge card at each vista/overlook is required to complete the challenge. Participants will also hear from the EMHR and receive a safety brief by our guides and DCNR Foresters/Park Rangers. Participants will then begin the challenge and should meet back at the camping area for a provided dinner and educational programming from DCNR Naturalist Rhiannon Summers and Cynthia Traore of the Northern Tier Regional Planning & Development Commission.

Participants will be required to take a photo at various Ricketts Glen State Park sites, including:
-Lake Jean
-Midway Crevasse
-Dam Breast (Lake Lehigh)
-Falls along Little Cherry Run Trail
-Mountain Springs Lake Dam
-Old Bulldozer Trail Overlook
-Fire Tower on Grand View Trail (Participants who join on Sunday’s hike will be granted monitored and special access to the tower and observe the spectacular view of multiple surrounding counties!)

We highly encourage youth participation, but please note that many of these trails are difficult for children under 13. Know your child’s limitations, as you will be responsible for them on the trail.
Due to camping area space as well as state guidelines and current restrictions on EMHR/DCNR events, we are limiting this event to 50 people, so sign up fast! All guidelines, including masks and social distancing, will be applied where necessary. Register at

Those traveling from afar, particularly in designated “quarantined areas”, should check their vehicles and belongings for signs of the spotted lanternfly and ensure they are not being transported here, as we want to keep them out of our beautiful region.

The “Sullivan County Hikes & Bikes” series is funded in part by the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau and Sullivan County room tax. See Less
