Not Your Grandmother’s Stitching!

Think embroidery is all doilies and dusty hoops? Think again. In this lively, beginner-friendly workshop, you’ll learn the FUNdamentals of modern hand embroidery—no prior stitching experience is required. Over 3 relaxed and creative hours, we’ll explore essential stitches and contemporary techniques – with plenty of room for individual flair, inspired detours, and creative community.

Each participant will receive a personal stitching kit, so the fun doesn’t end when class does. Whether you’re here to try something new, slow down for few hours, or discover your inner fiber artist, you’ll leave with new skills, a project in progress, and the confidence to keep stitching long after summer fades in Eagles Mere.

About Laura Lee

Laura was born and raised in Eagles Mere. A self-taught fiber artist, she describes herself as a “Serial Maker” – starting her creative journey making clothes for her trolls at the age of 5 – moving on to garment sewing, embroidery, indigo and shibori dying, knitting, and mixed media collage. She is happiest and most fulfilled when she is in a room with other makers – creating community, sharing, and inspiring each other. Laura brings her intense interest in creating a “maker” community in Eagles Mere with her service as a member of the EMFA Board of Directors.

When Laura is not covered in thread, she leads a patient safety program for a mid-Atlantic healthcare system. Laura lives in Washington, DC with her husband, Peter Grina, an architect. Their son, Kristof Grina, is co-founder of Up Top Acres, a rooftop farming and urban agriculture company based in DC. And last but not least – Laura and Peter share their home with Birdie, their avid Eagles Mere lake-swimming Golden Retriever.

“A community united by the ideals of compassion and creativity has incredible power. Art of all kinds – music, literature, traditional arts, visual arts – can lift a community.” Martin O’Malley
