No experience necessary. Really!

How do you want to depict yourself? Portraits created in this workshop will provide a snapshot in time, showing who you are at this moment.

On day one, you will learn how to draw a realistic black and white pencil portrait of the head. Amy will do a demonstration on measuring and proportion necessary to depict a representational head, and then work one-on-one with participants on their self-portraits.

Day two will focus on creating a portrait of your psychological selves. We will begin with a demonstration/lecture with examples of how pencil manipulation, composition, scale, proportion, and light can be employed to create a portrait that goes beyond straight representation.

Amy Cohen is a renowned artist and educator whose award-winning work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions, articles, and a short film. Cohen’s collages, paintings, sculpture, and interdisciplinary performances and installations deal with the vulnerability of the human condition. As a consultant to corporations, schools, arts organizations, and the mental health field, Cohen has been commissioned to create her unique community-based projects illuminating social, psychological, or historic issues. Her work, accessible to a diverse population, inspires introspection, creativity, communication, and community-building. Her projects have engaged others in communal healing as well as personal transformation through art. Cohen was awarded a Gradiva Award by the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis for fostering deeper understanding of the human psychology through her work. In tandem with her career as a working artist, Cohen is also an accomplished art educator, with extensive experience teaching children, teens, and adults in a broad range of educational and cultural settings. The hallmark of her teaching style is the ability to encourage artists and non-artists alike to master skills in a safe environment and to develop a unique creative voice. She holds a BFA Honors from Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from Tyler School of Art.
