Spend a night under the stars on Saturday, July 19th at 8:30 PM.

North Branch Land Trust is partnering with entomologist experts David Trently, Roxana Mery, and Staci Gibbson for an engaging program on attracting, observing, and identifying local moths. This event is open to all ages, and will be hosted by Leah Malarkey, North Branch Land Trust’s Environmental Education Coordinator.

“Join local naturalists as we use ultraviolet lights to attract ‘jewels of the night,’ better known as moths. The moths, and any other interesting insects that appear, will be photographed, identified, and added to the iNaturalist database. You will see that moths are not all dull, gray, or brown creatures. We may be visited by pink and yellow Rosy Maple Moths, large yellow Io Moths or even green Luna Moths. We will also take time to look in the surrounding vegetation for caterpillars, some of which glow under ultraviolet light,” says David Trently.

The event registration is at no cost; however, donations are encouraged as they support more events like this in the future. To learn more about the event or to RSVP, visit NBLT.org/events or email info@NBLT.org.

“Nature and wildlife doesn’t come to a stop when night arrives,” explained Malarkey. “In fact, many of Pennsylvania’s native species are nocturnal. I am excited to have the opportunity to hold an evening event, where families, friends, and nature lovers can come together to witness some incredible moths and other insects that are active during our sleeping hours.”

North Branch Land Trust is a registered 501(c)(3) conservation nonprofit operating in Northeastern Pennsylvania. NBLT conserves properties in an eight-county region of Pennsylvania (Bradford, Susquehanna, Sullivan, Wayne, Wyoming, Lackawanna, Luzerne, and Columbia) in the Susquehanna and Upper Lehigh Watersheds. North Branch Land Trust partners with landowners, communities, and stakeholders to conserve and care for Northeastern Pennsylvania’s lands and waters.
