The Nicholson Sesquicentennial Committee will host a drive-through luminaria on Saturday, May 24 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Nicholson Cemetery on Harding Avenue.  The event will honor the 425 veterans buried in the cemetery.

The committee will place a luminary (a paper lantern with a candle inside) on each veteran’s gravesite. The light is a reflection on the lives of those who served and a powerful tribute reminding us of the sacrifices that shaped our country and Nicholson’s contribution to American freedom.

Visitors will be able to drive through the cemetery after sunset to see the display. Taps will be played periodically throughout the tour.

The event is inspired by the Fredericksburg National Cemetery Luminaria, which features over 15,000 luminaries. The Nicholson Cemetery will capture the reverence and beauty of the luminaria on a smaller scale. The cemetery’s hilly terrain creates a terraced effect, which will offer incredible views.

The luminaria is a free, family-friendly event. The rain date is Sunday, May 25.

The luminaria is part of Nicholson’s 150th anniversary. Every month this year, the Nicholson Sesquicentennial Committee is hosting special events to celebrate the town’s birthday. An official celebration will be held on the weekend Saturday, August 23, 2025. For the latest news, visit nicholsonsesquicentennial.com or follow the Nicholson Sesquicentennial on Facebook.
