Mark your calendars for an incredibly unique event at Salt Springs Park!
On Saturday, May 30, 2026, at 10:00 AM, we are officially releasing a group of American Eels back into Silver Creek.
Did you know that back in colonial times, nearly 25% of the fish in our local waterways were eels? They were a vital food source for local aboriginal people and early settlers. Today, they are a threatened species—but we’re working to change that.
Thanks to our partnership with the Susquehanna River Basin Commission and the “Eels in Schools” program, we successfully overwintered these incredible creatures right here at the park. Now, it’s time for them to go home!
Event Highlights:
Educational Program: Learn mind-blowing facts about these fish. (For instance: Did you know American Eels can travel across dry land for nearly a quarter of a mile?! )
Eel Naming Contest: Help us give our slippery friends some personality before they head off on their journey!
The Big Release: Witness history as we restore this native species back into our local waters.
Event Details:
When: Saturday, May 30, 2026 at 10:00 AM
Where: Gather at the Wheaton House (Salt Springs Park, Montrose, PA)

Come out, support local conservation, and see a piece of our ecosystem restored. We can’t wait to see you there!
