Every month this year, the Nicholson Sesquicentennial Committee is hosting special events to celebrate the town’s 150th anniversary. February’s programs will focus on Nicholson’s fire company.

The committee will host a free history presentation on February 22, 2025, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Nicholson Tourism Center (21 Lackawanna Trail).

Then on February 23, 2025, the Nicholson Fire Company will hold an open house at the fire hall (44 Main St.) from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The public can receive free smoke detectors (while supplies last), learn about fire safety, view the fire equipment, and find out how to become involved as a volunteer firefighter.

The events coincide with the anniversary of Nicholson’s most catastrophic fire, which occurred on February 26, 1904. The fire destroyed all of Main Street, including 20 buildings, 3 residences, 8 barns, 9 stores, and 23 businesses. The town’s water pipes were frozen, and a bucket brigade did their best to battle the flames. Fire equipment was shipped in by railroad from Scranton, but it arrived too late.

The disaster prompted the town to form their own fire company on February 29, 1904. The town purchased firefighting equipment, including a 1905 antique steam pump that the fire company still preserves today. It will be on display in the new fire hall, which will be completed later this year.

The Nicholson Sesquicentennial Committee will continue planning events each month in 2025. March will honor Nicholson’s stores and businesses. An official celebration will be held on the weekend Saturday, August 23, 2025, which marks the exact day in 1875 when Nicholson’s incorporation papers were filed at the Wyoming County Courthouse.
