Wyoming County residents Jon and Denise Ebersole purchased the Metcalf Mansion on 50 West Harrison Street in Tunkhannock at the end of April. The Ebersoles plan to restore and preserve the home and grounds in an effort to save its place in local history and benefit the community.
“We want this to be a place for community gatherings and celebrations,” said Denise. “We’re already dreaming of open houses, house tours, afternoon teas, music on the porch, art hanging in the ballroom, celebrating Founder’s Day, carolers during Christmas in Our Hometown, and so much more.”
This is the second historic property that the Ebersoles have purchased. They also own The White House on Warren, an 1850s home that they restored and turned into a short-term rental in downtown Tunkhannock.
“Just like we’ve done with The White House on Warren, we will respect the integrity of this house and do everything possible to restore this historic landmark for future generations,” said Denise.
The mansion is a local landmark in Tunkhannock’s historic district. Henry Freeman Metcalf originally built the massive Queen Anne-style home in 1895. Near its completion, the Wyoming Democrat newspaper remarked, “The house is the finest one in town.” Henry and his wife, Pamelia, frequently opened their home to the community and hosted weddings, parties, school field trips, and other social gatherings. They were also avid history lovers and collected so many antiques and artifacts that they eventually opened a museum next door to their home.
The Metcalf Mansion was a bed and breakfast in the early 2000s but has sat vacant for several years. The property currently needs significant repairs. As part of the renovation process, the Ebersoles are creating partnerships with community members, leaders, and local nonprofits.
