Named Pennsylvania’s 2021 Trail of the Year

The D&H Rail-Trail spans 38 miles from the Simpson, Pennsylvania, to the New York border near Lanesboro. Managed by the Rail-Trail Council of NEPA, this recreational trail is ideal for walking, hiking, and biking. In the winter, it is a popular spot for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Designated areas are open to snowmobiling through NEP Sno Trails (trail pass required) and equestrian use.

The trail follows the route of the historic Delaware & Hudson Railway, which carried coal and lumber out of the Lackawanna River Valley. Along the way, you’ll spot many remnants of the area’s industrial past, including the Starrucca Viaduct and the Thompson Curve.

The D&H Rail-Trail passes through several communities, including Simpson, Vandling, Forest City, Union Dale, Herrick Center, Burnwood, Ararat, Thompson, Starrucca, Stevens Point, and Lanesboro.
